CUSTOM GUN MAKERS

For those of you who do not know where to start when it comes to restocking a gun or upgrading your existing gun with fancier wood, here is some information that may help. If you want a new stock made for your gun, first decide what gun maker you want. Tell him the stock you want made, what model, and inform him of any modifications that you prefer. Your custom gun maker may ask you questions about your weight, height, and arm length, and many will ask you to do an outline of your hand on a piece of paper.

Ask your stock maker what dimensions as far as thickness and length in a piece of wood are necessary for your project. There are many that will shape and inlet your stock and then you can do the finishing if you wish.

Or you may just want to duplicate your existing stock and forend wood. Any well-known gun smith with a duplicating machine will have gun patterns in your model. If not, you may have to send them your gun so your existing stock can be duplicated. Again, ask your stock maker what dimensions as far as thickness and length in a piece of wood are necessary to duplicate your stock.

Then, choose your wood. There are many gun smiths who are selling their own wood, but if you look at their wood it may not be the quality that you wish for. If you buy a piece of wood from us and you send it to these folks, nobody is going to be offended in this business. If you want to build a custom stock that has, for instance, a cheek piece, high combs, etc. always choose a piece of wood that is at least 2-1/4 inches thick or thicker. If you choose to go with a stock that does not have these modifications, 2 to 2-1/4 inches will usually be fine.

We have compiled a list of stock makers below. These folks have the best reputations that we know of, even though there are many very good gun smiths and stockmakers out there. By no means are we saying not to go to anyone else.

If you wish us to ship your wood directly to the stock maker of your choice, we are happy to do so. Just let us know and we will make those arrangements. If you have any other questions regarding the restocking process, or want individual help in choosing the perfect piece of wood for your project, we are here to help you with that.
